Nominations for the Pipe Bands Australia awards recognising outstanding contribution to performance, education and training and promotion of pipe bands are invited for consideration in the 2020 announcements.
Pipe Bands Australia introduced the awards with an initial 10 recipients in each category in 2018. Recipients in each category were also eligible for induction in the Hall of Fame. A maximum of two awards are now made in any two-year period.
The national awards honour contributions of members that have contributed at a high level or wide sphere of influence in the journey of the Australian pipe band movement throughout its rich history.
Online theory examinations will be introduced as part of a new structure for Pipe Bands Australia’s pipe band college that will be implemented following this month’s biennial national conference.
The online components will be progressively introduced from 2020, beginning with introductory levels for piping, drumming and drill and dress.
The introductory music levels will aim to give players a recognised benchmark of achievement within the first 18 months of beginning their journey as a piper or drummer, setting the foundations for incremental advancement through the syllabus. Australian bands considering competing at the Diamond Jubilee year Australian Pipe Band Championships next April are reminded that band membership is to be lodged no later than this Saturday to meet the requirement that bands are registered with PBA a minimum six months before the championship.
The registration of players is not affected by this requirement. The normal 14-day period for registration of players applies for the Australian championships and all contests.
International bands are required to have registered with their home association at least six months prior to the championships.
National councillors have given initial support to a White Paper proposal for a part-time executive officer for Pipe Bands Australia. Councillors at their biennial conference in Melbourne this month approved the preparation of modelling for future consideration a paid part-time executive officer (secretary).
Modelling will now be prepared for future consideration to provide honorarium/remuneration for the secretary’s position.
