Ray Thorburn OAM retires from panel
Ray Thornburn OAM has announced his retirement after more than 50 years as a drill adjudicator and officiating at six Australian championships.
Ray began his pipe band career as a drummer with the Goulburn Highland Society Pipe Band in 1951 and two years later led his first parade as a drum major on the occasion of the Queen’s coronation.
He has been drum major of community and RAAF bands over the years and assisted with the formation of the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Pipe Band in Goulburn and later the Kiama Pipe Band, helping to revive the defunct band in that community four years ago.
Ray organised a two-day highland games event in Goulburn in the early 1970s and later assisted with the establishment of Bundanoon is Brigadoon and the Berry Celtic Festival where he continues to serve on the committee.
A member of the Pipe Bands Australian national list of adjudicators for many years, Ray is thanked for his contributions to the movement over more than six decades.
