Life membership of Pipe Bands Australia has been bestowed on Viv Riley by the Western Australia branch.
Viv was presented with his certificate by Pipe Bands WA chair Malcolm MacLean in front of the large crowd and 10 pipe bands in attendance at the Armadale Highland Gathering on Sunday.
He has played with bands on the eastern and western seaboards in Australia and has notably competed with City of Blacktown (NSW) when it won the 1982 nationals in Grade 2 and WA Police Pipe Band when it won the 1998 World Championships in Glasgow in Grade 2.
Viv has tutored over 150 students in piping, plus coached numerous bands. He holds certificates for piping, teaching, dress & drill, rules and administration and is an active judge for solos and band events. He also previously held the appointment of historian for Pipe Bands Australia before retiring last year.
