Society promoting our championships

Officials of the Maryborough Highland Society are this weekend in Dunedin promoting the 2020 Australian Pipe Band Championships to New Zealand bands. Society general manager Malcolm Blandthorn, Nick Weaver and Glenn Hooper are attending the New Zealand Pipe Band Championships as part of the promoter's active plans to stage a successful Australian championships. The first Australian championships were hosted by the society in 1961 and it will again play host for the Pipe Bands Australia Diamond Jubilee year championships on 4 and 5 April 2020. Gold Cost Tweed Pipes and Drums is flying the Australian flag in Dunedin along with many Australian pipers and drummers guesting with New Zealand bands

Ballot of Bands closes midnight Friday

The 2019 Ballot of Bands closes midnight on Friday, 29 March, and bands are requested to give consideration to proposals contained in the ballot to assist national council in considering each of the proposals. Branches have distributed the ballot pack to bands. If your band has yet to receive one, please contact either your branch secretary or the national secretary. This year’s ballot includes the proposed introduction of Grade 4B as well as grading for juvenile bands. Entries for the 2019 Australian Solo Piping Championships in Adelaide next month close on Monday, 18 March. The championships are being promoted by Pipe Bands South Australia in association with the RU Brown Piobaireachd Society that will also be holding the nation’s premier Piobaireachd events on the weekend of 13 and 14 April. Bagpipes draw fans

Ann Bates lives in Broughty (pronounced Brotty) Ferry in Scotland and says she was overwhelmed to hear Hastings District Highland Pipe Band performing as part of International Bagpipe Day on Port Macquarie's Town Green, it has been reported in the Port Macquarie News. The Hastings band gave of many special International Bagpipe Day performances around the nation following an invitation to promote the music by PIpe Bands Australia. With the pipe band warming up in the background, Ann said she felt a strong connection to Australia. "Lachlan Macquarie is buried in Scotland. I feel a real connection to these shores," she said. "I've been here a couple of months and will be going home in April. "

Decision handed down

The membership of Pipe Bands Australia was totally betrayed by its former treasurer, a former official elected by peers who was today convicted and sentenced in the Queensland District Court. Her illegal actions displayed total disregard for good financial management of Pipe Bands Australia and placed her own self-interests above those of members, bands and the association. Pipe Bands Australia has been advised that Ipswich District Court handed down its decision today and the former treasurer was sentenced to four years imprisonment (suspended after 15 months) after pleading guilty to three counts of stealing property to a value over $5000.
