Passing of a WA icon
Pipe Bands Western Australia reports sad news for the WA pipe band community with the passing of Pipe Major John MacMurchie, a tutor, solo competitor, bandsman and mentor for pipers and drummers for all his life. John played with multiple bands in his time, including Perth Highland in the late forties (pictured here in 1950), Coastal Scottish, WA Police, PCYC, plus he helped the ladies bands and taught hundreds of pupils in his time.
John was also a very accomplished soloist and won the State Solos many times, plus was the backbone of the Pipers Society in Perth.
One of his pupils, Alisdair McLaren, who became Pipe Major of WA Police and then moved to Scotland to work at The Piping Centre and run the National Youth Band, will play John's old 1904 Laurie bagpipes when he competes in the World Championships with FMM this weekend.
Pipe Bands WA passes our deepest condolences to David, Shona, Alma, Ellen and the rest of the family.
