International stage live for Australia to experience


An international recital of some of the world’s most accomplished and renowned contemporary pipers and drummers will be live-streamed in September in a partnership between Pipe Bands Australia and Canberra College of Piping and Drumming.

Among the Australian and international performers at the recital on Saturday 22 September recital will be:

  • Willie McCallum & Finlay Johnston from Scotland. Willie is 8 times winner of the Glenfiddich Championship, 3 times winner of former winners MSR at the Northern Meeting, 5 times winner of former winners MSR Argyllshire Gathering, 7 times winner of the Donald MacLeod Memorial. Finlay won the Clasp at the Northern Meeting in 2016.

  • Richard Hawke & Greg Wilson from New Zealand - Richard won the Gold Medal 2007 Oban, is former Pipe Major Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band New Zealand Grade 1 Champions 2012-2016, Pipe Band Director St Andrews College, World Juvenile Champions 2013. Greg won the Gold Medal (Northern Meeting) 1990, Gold Medal (Argyllshire Gathering) 2006, and Northern Meeting Clasp 4 times.

  • Jim Kilpatrick MBE - 16 World Solo Drumming Championships, 19 World Drum Corps Championships, 15 Champion of Champions Drum Corps title

  • Steven Shedden - member Boghall & Bathgate Champion of Champions Drum Corps 2007, member Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band World Champion Drum Corps 2011, Spirit of Scotland 2016 UK Champion Drum Corps, current Australian Solo Drumming Champion

  • Tyler Fry - 3 times Member World Best Bass Section with 78th Frasers, 2 Times Member of World Champion Drum Corps at Shotts & Dykehead

Pipe Bands Australia president Chris Earl said: “We are delighted to support this initiative that allows all members across Australia to experience our local world-class performers sharing the stage with eminent pipers and drummers.

“Since the introduction of live-stream for our Australian Pipe Band Championships in 2016, members across the nation have embraced the initiative as a medium to share inspirational performances,” he said.

“The Canberra College of Piping and Drumming weekend is one of the nation’s vital contributors to education and training of a new generation of pipe band players along with those in other states where extremely successful annual weekend workshops attract hundreds of pipers and drummers.”

Athol Chalmers, of Canberra College of Piping and Drumming, said: “It’s is wonderful news that Pipe Bands Australia has agreed to partner with us to share these wonderful performances with those unable to attend the weekend workshop or recital.

“Our College supports the commitment of Pipe Bands Australia to the vital area of education and training and in providing opportunities for all players to experience the journey of musical development.”
