International Bagpipe Day
International Bagpipe Day is observed each year on 10 March and Australian bands and pipers are being encouraged by Pipe Bands Australia to promote the instrument and our music across the nation next month.
Performances can be registered at http://www.pipebandsaustralia.com.au/events ahead of a special Australia-wide map being created to again show the level of community engagement being achieved by Pipe Bands Australia and its bands.
A special promotional kit has been prepared to assist bands and members raise awareness of their performances on this significant international day.
The performance initiative follows Pipe Bands Australia co-ordinating the involvement of more than 1500 pipers and drummers at more than 200 locations in the Centenary of Armistice commemoration The Battle’s Over on 11 November.
A discussion paper at the 2015 biennial national conference looks at creating opportunities for bands to achieve a higher profile in their local communities through performance and engagement and assist those bands with recruitment strategies.
Future initiatives under consideration include the international Hug A Drummer Day while preliminary discussions have been held regarding pipe band participation in Australian Government commemorations for the 75th anniversary in 2020 of the end of World War Two.
