Robert Wallace heads solo piping title judging panel
Scotland’s Robert Wallace will head the adjudication panel for the 2019 Australian Solo Piping Championships for light music in April in conjunction with the nation’s premier and most prestigious piobaireachd competition conducted by the RU Brown Society.
The championship weekend is being presented by Pipe Bands South Australia and the RU Brown Society in Adelaide on 13 and 14 April.
Robert is regarded as one of the world’s leading solo bagpipe adjudicators and educators and a noted authority on ceol mor. During his competing career he enjoyed considerable success winning both Gold Medals, the Gold Clasp, the Bratach Gorm, the Gillies Cup, the Dunvegan Medal and Clasp and many other important piobaireachd prizes. In light music he also excelled winning the Former Winners MSR at the Argyllshire Gathering in 1985 and many other awards.
He is renowned as a teacher and his students regularly feature in the top prizelists. He has produced his own Tutor Books 1 - 3, the third solely concerned with ceol mor. He was the producer and joint editor (with Norman Matheson) of the 'Masters of Piobaireachd' series of ten CDs documenting the playing and teaching of the 'Bobs of Balmoral', RU Brown and RB Nicol. This teaching series spawned many similar, including that of P/M Donald MacLeod and others.
Robert Wallace is a journalist by profession and is editor of the popular Piping Press web magazine. For fifteen years, 1999 - 2014 he was Principal of the now-defunct College of Piping and oversaw the rebuilding of the College’s premises in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as revising and re-writing all of their tutor books and many other publications.
During this time he also edited the Piping Times magazine which, in 2005, was Highly Commended in the Scottish Magazine Awards. Robert is currently Vice-President of the Piobaireachd Society and a member of the Society’s influential Music Committee.
Joining Robert as an adjudicator in the light music sections are Nat Russell GC OAM, Athol Chalmers, June McLeish and Garry Barker.
In the RU Brown piobaireachd events, Robert will be joined by Malcolm McRae, Barrey Niven, Brett Tidswell, Sam, Young and Dennis Browning.
